NAIT has been involved with developing a polytechnic environment in Cuba. Partnering with Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA), NAIT offered instructor training, outcome-based training theory, and applied research development. During my secondments, I was required to review facilities and provide recommendations summarized in a needs assessment report to CIDA and NAIT. The needs assessment recommendations were to develop Cuban capacity to produce enhanced digital learning objects for the Cuban context, considering their limiting factors.
2 Workshops co-written and co-delivered in Havana Cuba:
UX Design techniques - Polytechnic Centre of Petroleum in Havana, Cuba
Advanced Design Techniques - Polytechnic Centre of Petroleum in Havana, Cuba
Additionally recommended and helped delivery courses on:
Introduction to photography
Introduction to Programming (HTML)
Introduction to Videography

With the economic and political embargo, we needed to adapt our learning materials.
Use the original material as inspiration and adapt it to the Cuban context. Considerations included lack of consistent electricity, what can be brought to the country, and the lack of international internet access. Additionally paying close attention to what is said about the country and shared with their citizens.

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is a student-centered approach to teaching and learning that focuses on clearly defined learning outcomes. In post-secondary education, OBE offers several key benefits:
Clarity and Alignment
Clearly defined learning outcomes ensure that students, faculty, and employers understand what graduates will know and be able to do.
Courses and assessments are designed to align directly with these outcomes, creating a cohesive and purpose-driven curriculum.
Student-Centered Learning
OBE shifts the focus from what instructors teach to what students learn, allowing for greater flexibility in teaching methods.
Students progress based on demonstrated competency rather than just time spent in a classroom.
Industry Relevance
Learning outcomes are often developed in collaboration with industry professionals to align with workforce needs.
Graduates are better prepared with the skills, knowledge, and competencies required by employers.
Flexibility and Innovation in Teaching
Faculty have the freedom to adopt innovative teaching strategies, such as project-based learning, flipped classrooms, and experiential learning.
Students can demonstrate their learning in diverse ways, accommodating different learning styles.
Continuous Improvement and Accountability
Regular assessment of student outcomes provides valuable data to refine courses and programs.
Institutions can track graduate success and adjust curricula to meet evolving educational and industry demands.
Enhances Student Motivation and Engagement
Clear expectations help students take ownership of their learning, increasing engagement and motivation.
Real-world applications and competency-based assessments make learning more meaningful.
